On Rebecca Godfrey

Last week Rebecca Godfrey died after long illness. We dated for two years in the mid-nineties, but hadn’t been in touch for the last twenty years.

I remember her as a wry and game co-conspirator. A keen observer of social behavior and a pop culture obsessive, always ready with a smart take on whatever was around us.

As an author, she was preoccupied with the struggles of adolescent girls. Sometimes she had doubts that this was a reasonable pursuit for serious writer in their early thirties. I admired that she stayed the course though, eventually publishing two substantial works on troubled teens, The Torn Skirt, and Under The Bridge.
