21st Year In New York
I rented a space in a warehouse building on Bedford Ave, across the hall from some friends. It had a skylight, but no windows, leaving me with a particular challenge when it came to installing air conditioning in a hot, humid New York summer.
No Bird Audubon
I was sent in to unruffled the feathers (not literally) and take my camera nowhere near the birds (yes, literally). My assignment was to tell the story of the sanctuary and it’s keepers, but not the swifts.
Josh Earley On Fire
I’m excited about my former intern Josh Earley. His mix of talent, ambition, and frankly, sinister taste make for a killer combination.
Political Quorum
As with any sitting, we talked while we shot, and as a politics buff, I asked Buckley his take on the Neo-conservatives and the Iraq War. He answered my questions, albeit briefly, and then asked, “Are we done with the photography then?”
Visiting Mentor Dave Heath
I arrived in Toronto to shoot an ad job a few days after Heath was hospitalized and I got a chance to visit him. I must have arrived on one of his truly good days since the ailment; he was playful, positive and pleased to have a visitor.
US Commerce Award
I am proud to be receiving this award despite the warnings of the Better Business Bureau, negative press reports, and the comments from other potential recipients.
How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?
We had one day to pull together the shoot – so with me on the ground in Los Angeles ready to hit the prop shops and Rolling Stone working the phone out of New York we got to work finding our robot.
Buck & Bryant
I don’t shoot with athletes very often but enjoy it when I do, I truly admire their physical grace and frankly, envy their abilities.
Xerox Ads Meet The World
I’m in Los Angeles this week shooting another co-branding ad with the Xerox company and Young & Rubicam.
Battling Smoke with Smoke
I photographed the moguls behind WeGrow for Mother Jones magazine. I was excited to head out to Oakland, California to shoot these entrepreneurs, the first serious upfront pot businessmen.
PDN Photo Annual Party 2011
Last night was the party for the Photo Annual for Photo District News Magazine. It was a great time, as always; talked with lots of photographer friends…
Pop Culture Implosion Video
The Wired piece is about the cultural implosion that is imminent (and desirable) as fringe subcultures move into the mainstream, leaving us culturally devoid. It was fascinating to see how knowledgable Patton Oswalt was on this topic.
Chris Buck’s Only Vice
Often my challenge for a photo shoot is coming up with an idea that sounds so inoffensive that even the most prickly publicist can’t deny me it. So, kissing a baby it was.
First Posting: Mother’s Day 2011
My mother was an early and regular supporter of my creativity. She took me to museums and often spoke with me about artists and what they did.
