UNEASY Gary Oldman

The Gary Oldman shoot was arranged with many restrictions and conditions by his handlers. I’d been in this sort of situation before and had learned that subjects may be more open to ideas than we’re led to believe.

Once we were getting along well (for which I really have to thank Elton John; I put on the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, and he knew every lyric), I sat with Gary and told him what I really wanted to do. This idea was based on a photo I’d seen in a local newspaper while vacationing in Maine; it was of a little boy who had just won a pie-eating contest. It looked sweet and funny, but also sinister.
